Last bus to Ischgl

Whilst I love skiing in Ischgl, one of the challenges of getting there under your own steam is that it's not on a train line - you have to get a bus up the mountain from Landeck-Zams railway station.

And whilst the bus is fairly frequent, it doesn't run very late - so this post looks at how late you can leave London / northern Europe and get to Ischgl without using a taxi.

In Winter 2022/23 the last 260 bus from Landeck-Zams station to Ischgl departed at 19:10 each evening (page 2 of the pdf).

INN to Landeck-Zams

Travelling by train from Innsbruck station the latest connection departs at 17:52 arriving into LZ at 18:56 but there's also a faster 17:47 departure arriving into LZ at 18:31 which looks like a safer option.

The F bus departs the airport every 20 minutes (at 17, 37 & 57 minutes past the hour) and takes just 17 minutes to get to the train station.  So the 17:17 bus from the airport, arrives at the train station at 17:34 in time for the 17:47 train.  The traffic in Innsbruck has always been ok when I've travelled through it, and Innsbruck station is well laid out to get to your platform quickly.

Earlier this year when I made this journey I bought a through ticket including the F bus, the train, and the 260 bus for just 19 euro - which was considerably cheaper than paying for each segment separately.

In order to be outside Innsbruck airport by 17:17 it means that you would need to leave London by around 13:30 ... which is unfortunate since there's a British Airways departure from Gatwick at 14:25 which is scheduled to arrive into INN at 17:30 ... but with the need to clear immigration (they don't separate EU and non EU arrivals) and collect your suitcase ... it's just too tight to catch the last train that connects with the last bus!

SZG to Landeck-Zams

Travelling by train from Salzburg station the latest connection departs at 15:56 arriving into LZ at 18:31 (stopping at Innsbruck on the way).

Bus Number 2 departs the airport every 15 minutes and take 22 minutes to get to the train station - although you can save a few minutes if you swap to the tram.  You could theoretically get the 15:30 bus from the airport and get to the train station at 15:52 to catch the train - but that's probably too tight!

In order to be outside Salzburg airport by 15:15 it means leaving London around 11:30 ... which is fairly civilised.

ZRH to Landeck-Zams

Train connection from Zurich airport aren't that frequent, so the latest departure from ZRH is at 14:23 (two changes required) arriving into LZ at 18:02 ... which would the connect with the 18:10 and 18:40 buses up the mountain.  There's also a 14:15 departure from ZRH which requires just one change of train (in Zurich Hauptbahnhof) arriving into LZ at 17:25 and connecting with the 17:40 bus to Ischgl.

With Zurich airport having it's own train station it eliminates the need for a bus connection.  In order to be down at the station underneath ZRH for the 14:15 train you would need to leave London around 11am ... which is also fairly civilised.

MUC to Landeck-Zams

Whilst Munich airport has good transport options (roughly every 20 minutes on the S8), it does take a good half hour to get into the city.  Departing the airport at 15:04 delivers you into the Munich East station at 15:35 connecting with the 15:44 departure to Innsbruck.  This arrives into Innsbruck at 17:18 giving plenty of time to get to LZ.  If you were to miss the 15:44 Innsbruck train, there's a slightly later departure at 15:58 which requires two changes (Rosenheim and Kufstein) which gets you into LZ at the same time.  If you missed the 15:58 train, the next ones are at 17:50 and 17:58 - so don't miss it!

In order to catch the 15:04 train from Munich airport - you would need to leave London around 11am ... which is still fairly civilised.

FDH to Landeck-Zams

There's two flights every Saturday from London to Friedrichshafen ... a 9:40 Easyjet flight from Gatwick and a 13:50 Lufthansa departure from Heathrow.

In order to make the last bus to Ischgl you would need to catch the 14:35 train from the airport station - which takes you the two stops into the main station, and connects with the 15:32 train to LZ.  Even if you chose to catch a taxi the short distance into the town station, the 15:32 is the last train which gets to LZ in time for the last bus.

This means that only the Easyjet flight will get you into FDH in time to make it to Ischgl.

Conclusion

In order to catch the last bus to Ischgl, you need to leave London around 11am for Salzburg, Zurich or Munich or 1pm for Innsbruck - which means that lots of flights are just too late.

The moral of the story is that it would be really helpful to have some later buses up the mountain to Ischgl from Landeck-Zams station - especially at the weekend when most people arrive.

the train timings aren't as helpful for this route, it's a longer journey and there's only a train every two hours - so it would be the 15:03 departure (arriving 18:55) for 69 eur

short trip to Åre

I wrote a while ago about trying to arrange a trip to Sweden to ski ... without any direct flights, it wasn't easy to arrange, and so I never went !

Now that Easyjet have announced a weekly flight on a Sunday from LGW to OSD (which is about 80km from the ski area), it should make the trip more feasible.

The EZY flight departs LGW at 07:00, arriving OSD at 10:50 - and then departing at 11:10, arriving back into LGW at 12:55

The LGW-OSD price during March is between 42 gpb and 75 gbp for a single.

The OSD-LGW price during March is 27.50 gbp (26th), 33.50 gbp (19th) or 55 gbp (12th)

Getting to OSD on connecting flights from London takes a while - using SAS flights connecting in Stockholm, you could depart LHR at 10:35 and arrive OSD at 16:35 with a very safe 4 hour margin in ARN.  Prices in March are about 88 gbp single.

It would be possible to get a shared transfer for these flights for 295 SEK each way per person (approx 27 gbp each way).

The same company also does shared transfers from Trondheim - at 13:15 and 17:15 on a Thursday (and further times on a Sunday) - but sadly the only direct flight from London to TRD arrives into TRD at 23:35 on a Thursday.  The cost is 390 SEK per person each way.

However, there's a direct flight from TRD to LGW departing at 18:00 which would require getting the 13:30 bus from the ski resort (arriving at the airport around 16:00) - but it would be another option.

Another option would be to fly from London to Stockholm on Wednesday evening - so able to do a full day's work, and then travel up to Åre on Thursday morning.  This might work better, as it appears the standard "handover" days in Åre are Thursday and Sunday.  Flights are generally available for 52 gbp from LGW to ARN with Norwegian.

Flights from ARN to OSD are generally available for 54 gbp - with 5 flights a day from SAS and more from BRA (which are slightly more expensive).

Another option is the overnight train from Stockholm - a seat would cost 595 SEK and a berth would cost 746 SEK (68 gbp).  The day time train takes about 7 hours and costs anything from 195 SEK, with a more typical price being 365 SEK (33 gbp).  Prices are only currently available on the Swedish Rail website until 19th March - presumably because it's too far in advance.

As far as accommodation - it looks like there are basic self catering apartment/studios available near the main town for 268 eur for Thu-Sun - which sleep 2 or 3 people.

London to St Anton

I'm looking to get to St Anton on Saturday 20th February ... there are loads of different options from London ... so I ended up putting together a spreadsheet to work out the different total costs - including the various different baggage fees from different airlines, and the different rail costs from different airports.  Below are the cheapest flights I could find, ignoring the 7am departures !

I ended up booking this flight to Innsbruck - it has the shortest transfer time - so hopefully I will be able to go and pick up my skis and boots from the hire shop in St Anton on Saturday evening.  The trip from Innsbruck airport into town by bus is quite straightforward ... and with a direct train from the main station at 17:15, i could get a taxi into town if the connection was getting tight.

I also looked at prices to Munich - but sadly the cheap Lufthansa flights arrived to late to make the last train to St Anton.

Flights to Geneva weren't particularly cheap, and the train costs around 120 euro each way - so the totals weren't competitive.

Dublin to Ischgl for a few days skiing

Ischgl isn't the easiest of places to get to from Dublin ... there aren't (m)any direct flights from Dublin to Innsbruck (the nearest) airport to Ischgl ... so the journey is a bit longer ...

The other complication is that Swiss (the airline) seem to have gone back to the dark ages with their pricing ... single flights are exorbitant ... so if there isn't a flight in one of the directions on one of the days that you want - you're screwed !

Ischgl has a reasonable amount of accommodation bookable through the town's website - with B&Bs in the town (rather than in Mathon which is 5km away) from about 55 eur per person per night sharing.  Ganahl is showing availability on the website - others may be available offline by email the tourist office.

Need to get back into Dublin around lunchtime on Sunday 7th February ... so looking at options that give a full day skiing on Saturday 6th ...

None of the airports have late flights on Saturday to Dublin - so starting off looking at late flights to London (so could fly to Dublin on Sunday morning) ...

Mid week ski break

Looking to go skiing in March ... heading off on Sunday ... coming back Thursday ...

For a change, considered going to Åre in Sweden ... but the access isn't great for a short break from London ... there aren't direct flights to Ostersund or Trondheim on the Sunday (or Monday) - so would spend best part of a day getting there ...

The other option of flying to Stockholm would require about 7 hours on the train to Åre so again ... best part of a day travelling (the bus connection is only on very limited days).

Thinking about other destinations, the most popular short break destination is Chamonix ... but since one of the party has already been there ... I thought I would looking into other options ...

One place that I've looked into before is Saas-Fee in Switzerland.  It's supposed to be a nice car free village with a new wellness centre, and lots of intermediate skiing, but not enough for a week (so a short break would be ideal) as well as altitude (village is at 1,800m with skiing up to 3,500m) so late March should be fine (current conditions are good).

It's less than a 3 hour drive from Malpensa airport ... the outbound flight would be 104 gbp (without baggage fee), and the return flight would be about 35 gbp (again without baggage fee).

The car hire would be approximately 60 gbp through auto europe (who I have used before) ... and viamichelin estimate 85 euro for the petrol and the swiss motorway vignette (return journey).

Whilst there are fast trains to Brig or Visp, car hire would give more flexibility with flight times (the last train would require arriving into Malpensa around 5pm).

Through the Saas-Fee website, they have a 3 star hotel near the main gondola station for 150 gbp per person sharing a twin room.

External mobile phone battery for a ski trip

In a few weeks' time, I'm off on a ski trip ... and since I use my iPhone for both tracking my runs, and also tracking my exertion ... I'm certain to need extra power - especially since battery performance is reduced in cold weather ...

I started off my search thinking that one of the Mophie Juice Packs would be the best option - as it would mean that I couldn't forget the battery, and they eliminate the need for a cable.  There is the Plus (2,100 mAh), the Air (1,700 mAh) and the Helium (1,500 mAh) ... but the downside is that they bulk up the iPhone, they are charged via a micro USB (rather than the Apple connection) so another cable to lose,  I'm worried that the on/off switch could activate in my jacket pocket by mistake, the screen protection they offer isn't good enough for my needs ... and ultimately, even the Plus doesn't provide a stunning amount of battery power !

Then I started looking at alternatives to Mophie Juice Packs ... there are quite a few out there, including some from Boostcase and from PhoneSuit that I seriously considered ... but ultimately they all suffered from some of the drawbacks listed above for the Mophie Juice Packs ...

On my searches, I came across two promising looking devices, which wouldn't need cables, but would stow safely beside my phone in my jacket pocket.  Firstly the Revi Charger looks great ... but despite launching in April to rave reviews ... it doesn't look like they have actually delivered.
Secondly the ChargeCard from Nomad looked like a good product - however a lot of user reviews complained that it stopped working after a few uses, and Nomad have quietly confirmed that it has been discontinued !

So then I turned to the small battery packs - which can offer more power, but do require a cable.  Another advantage is that fellow travellers might be able to suckle on the battery in times of need !

The top sellers on Amazon are (excluding the models that are too bulky for me):

1, 3, 4 & 6) Anker Astro Mini (3,200 mAh) - different colours
9 & 17) Jackery Mini Premium (3,200 mAh)
10 & 19) RAV Power Mini (3,000 mAh)

It appears that the only way to buy Anker products is through amazon, so that may boost Anker's rankings ... however other reviews suggested that the Astro Mini was more efficient than the Jackery or the RAV Power products.

So, after quite a few hours learning more about mobile phone batteries than I care to admit ... I went with the crowd, and have ordered an Anker Astro Mini ... in black !
Now I just need to remember to bring both the battery and cable each day, and hope that I don't lose the cable !!

dublin to garmisch

Looking to spend time in Garmisch over the new year ...

Aer Lingus have direct flights to Munich with a departure at 16:00 arriving at 19:25 on Wed 28th Dec for 176 eur (plus baggage charges). Ryanair have flights 4 flights a week with a 09:30 departure time - the flight on Wed 28th Dec is currently 105 eur (plus baggage and toilet charges).

German Rail have a departure from Munich at 20:31 arriving into Garmisch at 22:58 (with well timed change in Munich Hauptbahnhof) for 21 eur (including free toilet use).

Accommodation in Garmisch is available from about 30 eur per night - the town's website has a good accommodation search function, and includes places like Gästehaus Alpenkranz which is close to the station.

The return flight choice is more complicated with lots of options (prices updated 10th Dec):

Depart Munich at 11:20 on Aer Lingus arriving into Dublin at 12:50 for 147 eur (now 188 eur), requiring a train leaving Garmisch at 07:28 (24.80 eur)

i'm thinking of going to Ischgl for some skiing in January 2012 ...

the best value package holiday seems to be with Inghams for 602 gbp, which departs on a saturday, via Innsbruck ... or for 29 quid extra you could fly with BA, and with the evening departure on the way back, might get an extra morning's skiing (depending on the timing of the bus transfer to the airport) ...

alternatively, to be guaranteed an extra day's skiing, you could do your own package ...

accommodation

there isn't a great choice of accommodation that can be booked online through the town's website (unlike St Anton) ... but they do have a large number of B&Bs, it just seems that you have to contact them directly. their accommodation brochure lists Frühstückspensions from page 36 onwards (ÜF means Bed and Breakfast and HB is half board) and the map grid (planquadrat) helps to find the property - each street/house number combo is highlighted on the town map. to stay in the town itself, ignore all properties with a village name in brackets after the property name (Mathon, Versahl etc.)

one of the good options looks to be Bergfrieden which has 7 twin rooms and is located on the eastern side of town, about 10 mins walk from one of the gondolas, and a few minutes further to another gondola - which goes up to a different part of the ski area. prices start from about 35 euro per person per night ...

travel

the closest airport is INNsbruck, and Easyjet have return flights for around 191 gbp (including 1 piece of luggage). the resort isn't easy to access by train, but is possible with a bus into Innsbruck central station, a train to Landeck-Zams, and then a postbus up to Ischgl - total time would be about two and a half hours. the train part costs around 30 eur return, the postbus presumably another 10 eur each way, and the bus/taxi into Innsbruck station something similar ...

there doesn't seem to be any direct transfer buses, and the 100km journey by taxi for up to 4 people would be 300 eur or 320 eur return, or for up to 8 people it would be 382 eur return ...

another alternative is to fly to Allgäu airport (that well known hub) for 130 gbp (including the cost of a 15kg bag and the rip off credit card fee) from Stansted (dep just after midday) with Ryanair. the journey to Ischgl is about 200km - the 60 quid saving on the flight, could well be eaten up by the double distrance transfer ...

another option is to fly to ZuRicH - flights available from 98 gbp with Easyjet (a bit cheaper to fly back to LUTon) - the 3 hour train (approx 51 gbp) connection to Landeck-Zams (arr 19:21) would be too late for the last postbus up to Ischgl so would require a taxi 68 eur taxi. earlier flights with BA would be 150 gbp (cheaper available for horribly early departures) - so better to get the taxi up the valley ...

DIY price

so the total price (including an extra night's accommodation) via Zurich would be about 440 gbp (assuming the local taxi was shared between 3 pax) ...

flying via Innsbruck and got 4 people sharing a transfer the cost would be very similar to the long winded bus/train/bus option (even cheaper if there were up to eight in a minibus transfer) - and the total price including flights and accommodation would be around 500 gbp ...

Final Thoughts

if there were 4 or more people to share the transfer - Innsbruck seems like the best choice, or if there were just a couple of people, Zurich sounds fine !
